New Heaven - Project description

The series follows the development of the iron and anthracite industries in rural Pennsylvania. From archaic iron furnaces in the west, to steel factories in the east, I started examining the stereotypes and misconceptions I had on the history of the state. I reassess these narratives, romanticized by popular culture, examining the history of ore in the region, and its raw processing technologies. The transformation of the land due to the coal mining is alongside with the construction work in 2017 of a natural gas pipeline in local communities through Pennsylavania. Archives found in the state document scenes of work from the beginning of the twentieth century. Historical reenactment are popular events in the area. Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima was staged in 2017 in Reading. The demolition derby and the rodeo have to be part of this story on the development and the downturn of industries. Both technical, one is literally to knock down cars, while the bareback rider try to be in control on a 1500 pounds bull. I interweaved these games with a worker-based narrative because they create symbols and fantasies on the means of production. New Heaven explores the industrial history of rural Pennsylvania, the current state of its lands and the industrial effort being deployed today.
